Atzi's Flowers, the Power of Empty Space

There are lessons to be learned all the time and I always learn much when making art. Here’s a bit of it...

The process of bringing what is in the head and heart into a visual, tangible ‘thing’ is always a challenge of skill, courage, clarity, perseverance and serendipity. I can only speak from my experience and how I work, but the way a sketch / idea starts out may not be how it ends up. It can and often is much better. Empty spaces have power. The power of this illustration is not so much in what is there, but what is left out as well. In the continuum of time, any one life is so very brief, especially in comparison to what goes on past it and what came before it. But it is no less powerful in that brief window. How very wonderful a grandmother is and even today, mine still shapes my views. Here’s to being that person to your little peeps all you grandmothers and grandfathers!

This illustrations is from pages 10-11 in Atzi's Flowers, written and illustrated by me! Proceeds go to Pope Francis Center for Homeless in Detroit MI.
